 The book is a comprehensive work that sheds light on the urban history of Baghdad, highlighting its importance as a political capital and one of the greatest centers of Islamic civilization in the eighth century AD. 

 

The book covers periods of scientific and cultural prosperity in different eras, as Baghdad was a center of science and knowledge in the Abbasid era and a home to scholars from various cultures. It also reviews the major challenges that the city faced, starting from the Mongol invasion in 1258 and the repeated occupations until the establishment of the Iraqi Kingdom in 1921, then the Republican era in 1958 and up to the present time. 

 

The book deals with the unique architectural heritage, and the diverse social and cultural life, throughout the history of Baghdad. The book addresses the future prospects of Baghdad, despite the current challenges, pointing to the possibility of restoring its cultural and civilizational role.

Alaa Al-Tamimi, a Canadian engineer of Iraqi origin, is a recognized expert in structural engineering and urban planning. He earned his PhD from Pierre and Marie Curie University in Paris and taught at several universities, overseeing major projects in Iraq before moving to Canada in 1996.

The former mayor of Baghdad is now an international consultant, writer, and lecturer, sharing his expertise and experience through his books and training courses.
